Welcome to the June edition of Ulster Business
BUSINESS IN THE COMMUNITY: It's been a month of revelations: Expenses, elections and the green shoots of recovery. With the headlines of expense-scamming by the people we elect to run the country it was little wonder that the turnout for the European elections was 9% down on five years ago at just 43%. We are proud to cover the Business in the Community awards in this month's magazine which reward those companies with sound corporate and social responsibility practices. The importance some of our local firms place on this side of their business could be something our politicians should think of practising in order to restore public confidence. But while this political hoo-ha has been going on, the UK economy has shown the merest flicker of recovery, by 0.2% in April and 0.1% in May. While economists aren't rushing forward to say the end of the recession is nigh, there is certainly more confidence in the business community. To show how our biggest firms have withstood these testing times and offering a unique insight into the local business world, we will be featuring the 'Northern Ireland Top 100 Companies' in our next magazine in August.

GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY: Northern Ireland's food and drink/agri-food sector is expected to be the main beneficiary from the current weakness in sterling, says Ulster Bank economist Richard Ramsey. NI food exporters have a golden opportunity to outperform their rivals south of the border in this market, and in the RoI itself.
FUTURE IN FOCUS: A group of the food sector's key players came together for Ulster Business with two prominent permanent secretaries from DARD and DETI for a round table discussion on the main issues of the day. The event was sponsored by Goldblatt McGuigan.
PEOPLE IN BUSINESS: Chief Executive at Aer Arann, Paul Schutz, (right) currently running two daily flights from Belfast to Cork, answers our questions on his career and his challenges to date.
DONNELLY HONDA: A new dealership has opened on Belfast's Boucher Road under the Donnelly banner, promising a quality customer experience for sales of new and used Honda cars.
POSTALGROUP MAILING: Long-time mailing guru John Hughes of Mail Matters is building up a customer base for an innovative postal service for Northern Ireland, in conjunction with Royal Mail, to offer large volume posters with a new low-cost service for local mail.
BUDGET BREAKFAST: Those attending the BDO Stoy Hayward budget breakfast came away with plenty of food for thought with regard to tax changes announced in Budget 2009 and the state of the local economy.
ON TRACK: Down Royal Racecourse has entered the final stages of a £3.75m upgrade programme which will significantly enhance the track's hospitality offering making it one of the most prestigious horse racing facilities in Ireland.
